Southern California Edison has financed a new project to help re-grow kelp forests off the San Clemente shoreline. The cooling system from the San Onofre power plant has been drifting south into the ocean devastating the reefs. The drifting currents demolished 180 acres of habitat and the utility company plans to invest $40 million to rebuild it.
The San Onofre plant is the regions largest power source. As referenced on the SCE SONGS fact sheet, it's nuclear reactors 2 and 3 can supply enough power to support 2.75 million households. This reef project is celebrated as a huge effort to rebuild what the San Onofre nuclear power plant has inadvertently destroyed.
